Asha Kiran

Asha Kiran is an NGO operating in Pune. They set up makeshift schools at construction sites in order to care for the children of construction workers who have nowhere to leave the children. If it were not for Asha Kiran, these children would be running amok around the construction site, which is hazardous for both the workers and the children themselves.

Asha Kiran negotiates with the construction site developers and the latter give them a small piece of land, where they construct a tent, approximately 5 m x 4 m in size. Each "centre" is manned by one teacher and one assistant. Children of all ages are welcome, as long as they belong to the construction workers.

Asha Kiran has 2 rickshaws which distribute food the the centres.

At this time, Asha Kiran is operating 14 such centres at construction sites around Pune.

IWCA member Kajal Fabiani visited one of the makeshift camps in Pune.
