ACOGEM

Updated: Sep 18, 2019

ACOGEM is a non profit organization dedicated to helping immigrants on the threshold of poverty to settle into Spain and make a living for themselves and their families.

These are the services that it offers to immigrants:

1. LEGAL AID AND ADVICE ON IMMIGRATION LAWS

The legal department’s object is to give legal advice, help and guidance to those immigrants who voluntarily ask for help and don’t have the means by which to obtain help privately. The legal advice given is for immigration of foreigners insofar as work, legal guidance, social security, gender discrimination and violence and tax matters are concerned.

2. AID TO COVER BASIC NEEDS

Help is given in cash and kind to those who are members of the Association. They are vetted thoroughly by means of a personal interview. Candidates are referred by other known members of the association. The aid given is destined to primary needs such as housing, utilities, food, medicines, text books for school children, transport and others. Whenever we receive funds and food from the FEGA, the Banco de Alimentos, private donations and other, we ensure that they are put to the best possible use. We have enjoyed the unconditional support of the IWCA for the last ___ years.

3. TRAINING

We impart courses to help immigrants to integrate seamlessly into Spanish society: Social skills: this is a weekly course designed to help beneficiaries to find a job. The beaurocratic red tape is explained, the workers’ obligations and rights are explained as well as the obstacles and skills required. Tips on how to give a good interview and Spanish culture is explained.

Spanish:

This course is open to adults up to the age of 70. Country of origin of the attendees: Armenia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Guinea, Kazajstán, Kurdistán, Morocco, Moldavia, Nigeria, Rumania, Rusia, Ukraine, Brazil…

4. WORK PLACEMENT

We have contacts with some companies who hire our members. Usually the job offers are for domestic chores. We act as intermediaries in this respect.

5. DISTRIBUTION OF SECOND HAND CLOTHING

We have a second hand clothes distribution service, whereby we receive donations, sort these out into the different types of clothes (size, Summer or Winter, gender) and then distribute them among our members.

All these services are rendered free of cost for our members. We are very grateful to IWCA for their help, which makes it possible for us to do reach a larger number of beneficiaries. We are especially grateful to Minoo for her unwavering dedication and support over the years.
